Exciting opportunity ~ Calling all makers and crafters! €1000 prize!

I would love to share with you this exciting competition to create a tactile book!

Tactile books are a wonderful way for children with little or no sight to enjoy picture books. They are books in which all the illustrations are specifically designed to be explored by touch.

MORE INFORMATION

Typhlo and Tactus is an international competition to encourage the design and production of these brilliant tactile books. Entry is free and the creator of the winning book will receive a 1,000 euro prize. Could you design and make an entry for this year’s competition? The closing date is 16th August 2019.

UK entries will be shortlisted by a group of professionals, with input from visually impaired

children. The selected five books will be sent to Brussels where an international judging panel will meet to choose a winner in mid-October.

Everyone is welcome to enter. In the past we have had great entries from craftspeople, teachers, artists, students and visual-impairment specialists.

The winning book will need to be very appealing to blind children under the age of 12. It should have lots of tactile interest and be robust enough to withstand enthusiastic exploration. The text will be translated, so alphabet books and rhyming text are not likely to appeal to the judges.

Guidelines, competition rules and an entry form can be found at www.tactus.org and there is extra information at www.clearvisionproject.org. ClearVision is the co-ordinating organisation in the UK. If you have any questions, or would like to explore some tactile books, please contact Alexandra Britton, c/o ClearVision: info@clearvisionproject.org.

If you belong to a group of people interested in entering the competition, we may be able to arrange a speaker to come and tell you more.

Don’t worry about the braille! We will add it to your entry if you leave a space.

All entries will be returned to their owners after the competition - unless you are willing to donate them to the ClearVision library, to be enjoyed by children with visual impairment in the UK and Ireland.

Send completed entries to:

ClearVision,

Linden Lodge School,

61 Princes Way,

London

SW19 6JB

The closing date for UK entries is Friday 16th August 2019.
